Wichita Adventures: Local Wineries

Last month I finally got to write a love letter to one of my favorite cities (Las Vegas) and this month I get to write about another great love of mine... wine!

Have you ever done a wine tour? My experience was loading onto a bus and spending a few minutes each at a handful of wineries. It was fun but I must admit that I prefer to take winery visits one at a time. Most wineries offer a tasting for little to no cost. I like to partake in a tasting, then get a glass of my favorite wine while catching up with a girlfriend or two, and I always buy a bottle to take home. When I crack open the bottle it's like a little postcard to myself reminding me of the fun time I had at the winery. Here is my round up of top notch Wichita area wineries!

Wheat State Wine Co

Location: Winfield, KS

Tasting Info: Free tastings and tours, open Fri-Sun 12 am - 6 pm.

Favorite Wine: Plow Boy (sweet table wine)

Note: during the warmer months they have live music right on site!

Wyldewood Cellars Winery

Location: Peck, KS

Tasting Info: Free Tastings, Mon-Sat 9 am - 6 pm, Sun 12 pm - 5 pm.

Favorite Wine: Elderberry Blackberry Mead

Note: They are Kansas' largest winery, as well as one of the oldest and most awarded wineries in the state. We got to meet the owner who is full of so much wine knowledge. They offer a "wine tasting experience" where you can learn from him too that is perfect for groups or parties!

Grace Hill Winery

Location: Whitewater, KS

Tasting Info: $5, Thurs-Mon, 12 am - 6 pm

Favorite Wine: Fruit Bomb Sangria

Note: Grace Hill is a favorite among Wichita locals. Before even visiting we had already tried 3 wines at different social events. Their tasting included 8 wines. Other stand outs were: Dodging Tornadoes, Peckerhead Red, El Gato Moscato, and Fruit Bomb. Fruit Bomb is a non-grape based wine made out of apples and raspberry. They mixed it with ginger beer, lemon, and lime to get my favorite drink!

Bonus - Note About Valentine's Day

When I was planning one of my winery visits, the only day my gal pals had available was on Valentine's Day. I asked my husband if he would mind if I went out with the girls instead of our usual date night. He responded, "as long as you'll be my valentine the other 364 days of the year." Even after the winery, I still came home to my favorite meal and sweet cards. So if your Valentine's Day didn't turn out the way you wanted it to or holidays in general stress you out - don't sweat it. It's way more important to date your spouse on the regular life days than the special days!
